Hydrologic Instrumentation Facility (HIF)

Hydrologic Instrumentation Facility (HIF)

The Hydrologic Instrumentation Facility (HIF), a state-of-the-art infrastructure project developed for the United States Geological Survey (USGS) on the esteemed campus of the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. This remarkable facility, spanning 95,000 square feet over two stories, represents a significant leap forward in hydrologic research and instrumentation.

Located on an 8.5-acre site, the HIF boasts new parking areas for privately owned vehicles (POV) and extensive concrete access roads, ensuring seamless connectivity and accessibility. At the heart of its design philosophy, the facility embraces sustainability. This is exemplified by a large solar photovoltaic (PV) array installed on the roof, reducing energy consumption and promoting renewable energy use. Further enhancing its green credentials, the facility offers electric car charging stations, encouraging the adoption of environmentally friendly vehicles.

A testament to engineering excellence, the construction incorporated 7,500 cubic yards of concrete. This was used in creating robust tornado shelter foundations, a sophisticated testing basin, a 235-foot-long tilting flume tank, and a 350-foot-long tow tank. These critical components underscore the facility’s capacity for advanced hydrologic research and testing.

Attention to detail and quality was paramount throughout the project. The slab and foundations incorporate a 3-part vapor barrier and vent system, safeguarding the structure against moisture and enhancing its durability. The tank interiors are treated with a marine coating system, including sandblasting, epoxy mortar, and an epoxy topcoat, ensuring longevity and resistance to the harsh elements of water-based research environments.

Further enhancing the facility’s research capabilities are four testing wells on-site, ranging from 85 to 200 feet deep. These wells are integral for testing and calibrating instruments dedicated to measuring groundwater quality and quantity, providing invaluable data for hydrologic studies and environmental monitoring.

The Hydrologic Instrumentation Facility (HIF) is a beacon of innovation and sustainability on the University of Alabama’s Tuscaloosa campus. It stands as a testament to our commitment to delivering projects that not only meet but exceed our client’s expectations, contributing to scientific research and environmental stewardship.
